7B Homework Completion

I am failing I feel at homework completion this has always been an issue for me. I like to half-ass my homework a lot. I really don’t enjoy completing homework…but then again who really does. This week I decided to try and complete more of my homework than ever before. It’s a very hard task for me to do. I like being a social human being. I like to go out and hang with my friends sometimes. Since I like doing these things sometimes I do not do all of my homework. So this week instead of going out or even just hanging out in the quad at night, I attempted to complete all of my homework.

I ended up failing at this once again. I completed more homework than I ever have before though. I did 95% of my homework because I did not complete all of it due to the fact that  I fell asleep doing some of my homework. But you know what I am very proud that I did not fail as bad as I normally do. I normally end up doing 60% of my homework during the week because I socialize. So actually I am realizing I did not fail I did not complete all of my homework but I did complete more than I normally do. Accomplishing something I usually fail at makes me feel good. That’s one thing I hate about failing. You feel so bad about yourself when you fail especially if you try as hard as you possibly can to succeed. Failure is not an option for me when it comes to homework anymore. I must complete all of it. If I don’t I won’t feel horrible but I will feel really disappointed in myself because I know I can do so much better.

6I Tutoring Center Visit

This past Thursday I went to the tutoring center for the first time. I was having a hard time understanding everything in math class so I decided to go there for extra help. The people who work in the tutoring center are so amazing. They explained everything in a way that I understood. That night when I went to do my homework on mymathlab I got every single question correct. Going to the tutoring center made me so much more confident as a student. I think also if we had not gone on our little hunt to see where it was that I never would have found it and used it. Thank you Ashley for showing the INQ class around southern without you I’d still be struggling in math.

6V I think I can I think I can

The dictionary definition of persistence is the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people. My definition of persistence is what you do to keep going with a task. In my life I have used persistence a lot. I have done things that I have needed persistence for. My one example of persistence is with was playing a sport I would be knocked down and feel like sometimes I was not good enough at what I did but I kept being persistent and working hard and it would pay off.

Two words that I learned about this week:
1.     Dream-a series of thoughts, visions, or feelings that happen during sleep
2.     Draft-a version of something (such as a document) that you make before you make the final version

6B True Grit

I really connected grit to the concept of mindsets this week. The definition of grit is sticking with things over a longer period of time. There is a grit scale, which determines how likely one would achieve success under challenging circumstances. This idea of project completion and learning made me really think about the types of mindsets we have previously learned about.
There are two types of mindsets we have previously learned about. The first mindset is the fixed mindset. The definition of a fixed mindset is the belief that intelligence is a fixed trait and talent without effort. A person with a fixed mindset believes they cannot learn new things because they are born with a certain amount of knowledge.
The second type of mindset is growth mindset. The definition of a fixed mindset is the belief that intelligence and abilities grow with you. You learn new things all of the time. You have the ability to learn more information that what information you were born with in your brain.
By having these two mindsets your amount of grit can be very different. A person who has the fixed mindset will have a much harder time having a lot of grit. This is because they will have a harder time completing tasks due to the fact that they don’t believe they learn as much from doing certain tasks. When they have a big project due they may end up doing half of the work because they just get bored of the project they are doing.
On the other hand you have a person with a growth mindset. The person with the growth mindset will have a lot more grit. The person with the growth mindset will probably have twice as much grit as the person with the fixed. This is because the person with the growth mindset wants to work as hard as they can to perfect tasks such as major projects. This person with the growth mindset wants to learn so much.
Overall I think that this connection is how the grit scale could have even been created. Without having a certain mindset you won’t have any grit at all.

6A Overcoming Anxiety

One thing I have had to overcome in my life is my anxiety. I have been anxious all of my life basically. It all started in 4th grade when my Uncle Brian had cancer.  I was very close to him and seeing him in and out of the hospital made me really anxious all of the time. When he died that’s when I was really worried and anxious all of the time. I had to start going to therapy and talk about my issues.
I was fine for a few years and then 8th grade hit. I am not germafobic per say but I really hate being sick. Whenever I have been sick in my lifetime I am always miserable. I think its because I’m sick about once a year. When I was in 8th grade I actually got sick from going to visit someone in a hospital. After that I was afraid an anxious about going to hospitals. So once again I had to go to therapy.
I was fine until about 11th grade in high school. Then suddenly I was having panic attacks. The whole idea of applying to college really started to freak me out. There was a point where I couldn’t even eat because I was so stressed out that I was nauseous all the time. I ended up having to go see a psychiatrist who prescribed me medication so I would be less anxious. I am now able to do things that made me anxious before.
I have the mindset now that no matter what things are not going to make me as anxious as I used to be. I haven’t really had a panic attack since going on this medication. Other than the medication I do a lot of other things that make me less anxious. I workout every single day because I know that keeps me calm. By finding things I know I can do to calm myself down I have become a lot less anxious as a person.
