I can’t believe that my first
semester as a college freshman has come to an end. It feels like just yesterday
I was moving in and had no idea what to expect. Now I have completed my first
semester and I feel so accomplished.
As a
college student I have not only learned a lot for school I have learned a lot
about myself. I know what my strengths and weaknesses are as a student and what
I can do to achieve my goals as a student. My biggest challenge this semester
was procrastination. College is very different from high school. In high school
you do most work in the classroom and don’t spend a lot of time doing homework
outside of school. You have the occasional paper to write for class but never
due the next time class is held. In college there is a lot more homework and
many more papers written in one night. In high school I could procrastinate and
get all of the work or at least 90% of the work done. The challenging thing for
me this semester was to not procrastinate and get all of my work done. In
college you cannot hand in stuff late like high school. That was my biggest
challenge this semester and so far I think I’m starting to get the hang of not
procrastinating as much.
I feel like
I have accomplished a lot this semester but there were a few moments that stuck
with me until the end. My first “big achievement” was giving my first
presentation in my professional presentations course. Every freshman has to
take a technical fluency class. Mine ended up being COM 205 professional
presentations. At the beginning of the semester I was so afraid to present in
front of people by myself. I am a performer, I sing, but for me speaking in
front of people is one of the most terrifying things ever. Especially when you
barely know them. I ended up doing it and I got an A on my presentation because
I earned it. I completed my presentation with confidence. Another
accomplishment I had this semester was completing my first English portfolio.
For ENG 110 and ENG 112 you must complete a portfolio for your final grade. It
was a lot of work to do. I had a lot of writing and editing and revising to do.
Once it was finished and I handed the entire portfolio to my professor I felt
amazing. I know now that I can write at a college level and that is an amazing
feeling.
My goals
for next semester are as follows: First off I want to make the Dean’s list and
I am going to try as hard as I possibly can to make it. This first semester I
did slack off a little bit. I definitely did not work to my full ability and I
know that. I could have worked harder. I could have done more work actually.
But this semester I am going to do all of my work. Every word that has to be
written will be. Every math problem will be solved. I will achieve this goal.
My other goal for this semester is to not drop any class. This past semester I
was really having a hard time in Math so I decided to drop it. I was struggling
in my other classes because of it. This semester that is not going to happen. I
am going to get all the help I need to succeed in math class. I will not drop
it again. To make Dean’s list I have to challenge myself and believe that I can
do anything.
I hope what I have learned this first semester in college
can help me in all the semesters to come.
