This past Monday Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor gave
a talk here at Southern. From her hour long speech not only did I learn a lot
about her life but I found out something that might have even changed what I
want to do with my life. Sonia talked about how in life specifically in college
it is okay to go off of the path your are supposed to be on and take classes in
a subject you are interested in. By her saying this I am actually thinking
about changing my major. I have become very interested in communication
disorders but since this semester I am taking a class in sociology which I
never have before I have become a lot more interested in that.

9V Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is the general term given to a wide range
of cognitive skills and intellectual dispositions need to effectively identify,
analyze, and evaluate arguments and truth claims; to discover and overcome
personal preconceptions and biases; to formulate and present convincing reasons
in support of conclusions; and to make reasonable, intelligent decisions about
what to believe and what to do.
Two new words I learned this week:
1. Sociology- the
science of society,
social
institutions, and social relationships; specifically
: the systematic study of the development, structure, interaction,
and collective behavior of organized groups of human beings
2. Kindness- the
quality or state of being kind
9A Thinking Critically
Critical thinking is the general term given to a wide range
of cognitive skills and intellectual dispositions need to effectively identify,
analyze, and evaluate arguments and truth claims; to discover and overcome
personal preconceptions and biases; to formulate and present convincing reasons
in support of conclusions; and to make reasonable, intelligent decisions about
what to believe and what to do.
Benefits of Critical
Thinking
1.
Thinking In The Classroom- you use critical
thinking when higher-order thinking is needed. In college there is a lot of
higher-order thinking that occurs.
There are also courses in college
you can take in college to become a better critical thinker. Here are some of
the things you learn in these courses
·
Understanding arguments and beliefs of others
·
Critically evaluating those arguments and
beliefs
·
Developing and defending one’s own
well-supported arguments and beliefs
2.
Critical Thinking In The Workplace- People who
are hiring people for jobs are always looking for people who are critical
thinkers. They are never looking for people who just think. Also a reason why
people want to hire a person with a college degree is because of the things you
learn in the classroom.
·
Understanding arguments and beliefs of others
·
Critically evaluating those arguments and
beliefs
·
Developing and defending one’s own
well-supported arguments and beliefs
3.
Critical Thinking In Life- Critical thinking is
valuable in many contexts outside of the classroom and the workplace. First,
critical thinking can help us avoid making foolish personal decisions. It can
help us avoid mistakes such as buying things we do not need. Second, critical
thinking plays a vital role in promoting democratic processes. Third, critical
thinking is worth studying for its own sake, simply for the personal enrichment
it can bring to our lives. Critical thinking is one of those things that
benefits us in any situation.
9B Midterm Goals
My midterm grades reflect how I as a student have been
doing. Certain classes I am realizing I do need to work a bit harder. As a
student I know my strengths and weaknesses. I am seeing now that because I know
these I have been working harder in classes I am good at and not focusing on
the ones I am struggling in. I need to
put my main focus on all of my classes not just the ones I know I need to work
harder in.
One thing I know I need to do to succeed in Math is using
the tutoring center and my professors office hours more frequently. I have struggled in math during the first
half of the semester. I know I have not been putting as much time in as I
should so I can get a good grader in the class. There are many more things I
can do to push my grade up and get to the C or even the B I know I can achieve
in the next few weeks.
Along with getting my grade up in my math class I would like
my grades in all of my other classes to either go up or stay the same. As of
right now I have a D+ in math, C+ in INQ, P in English, A in choir, B+ in
sociology and B in Communications. I would like all of these grades to at least
go up one letter. I know what I need to do to get these grades up. I know that
I have not been working to the full potential I have in my brain. There is so
much more I can do that I have not done so far in this semester. I have been
procrastinating on my homework doing most of it the night before its due. I’ve
been doing all of my blogs for this class on Saturday night and I have not been
studying as hard as I could. This is all changing starting right now. I am
going to step up my game and get amazing grades!

8I Majors Expo
This past Wednesday I attended the majors expo. I gained a
lot of information about my current major and about other majors I have found
an interest in. The major I am currently in Communication Disorders is very
competitive. So by having more things that interest me if I don’t get into my
current major I have more options. The majors I am also interested in are
Sociology, Special Education and Athletic Training. I am very interested in
majors that involves problem solving and helping others. Without going to the
majors expo I don’t think I would be interested in Athletic Training like I am
now. I’m happy that from going to the majors expo I have more information that
will be very useful in my college education.
