5V Free Agency

When I think of the word agency the first thing that comes to my mind is hockey. There is a time in every hockey player’s life where there contract ends and anyone could sign them. So when I think about the word now, I think to myself how does being out of a contract relate to my own life.?

Agency is a major part of my life right now. The word agency to me means being independent and being you. College is about finding out who you are as a human being. Its not about anyone else but yourself. Your are finally out in the world alone without your parents. College is my chance to be that hockey player who needs a contract to sign. Instead of a contract to sign I at the end of these years here at Southern will receive my degree.

Here are the two words that I learned more about this week:

1.     Management- the act or skill of controlling and making decisions about a business, department, sports team, etc.
2.     Language- the system of words or signs that people use to express thoughts and feelings to each other

5B Working Hard or Hardly Working

After doing my time study I am realizing I need to sleep more. I also need to work a little bit more on homework than I am currently. Sleep is something I used to have too much of as a high school student. Now clearly I am not getting enough during the week.

In high school I tried to get around 9-10 hours maybe more if I had the chance to. Granted I did not spend as much time on homework last year as I currently do. I think overall my senior year of high school I did about 8 hours of homework a week while now I am doing up to 30 hours. In high school I would get about 85-90 hours of sleep a week while now I’ll be lucky on a week day if I even get 6 hours of sleep. This whole sleep thing is a big change for me.

I am not only not sleeping as much because of the work, but because I am socializing a lot more now than I did in high school. In high school I never really went out or hung around with my friends on a weekday because my parents wanted me to only focus on school. The main part of college other than the work is to meet people and socialize. I mainly do that at night. I hang out in the quad in front of chase until about midnight every night. Sometimes I’ll hang out in the lounge of chase with people on my floor till 1 am. My social time this past week was 9 hours more than the amount of hours I spent on work. That statement is not good for me. It used to be the other way around when I was in high school.

I know the key to my success is sleep and hard work. I need to try and find that happy medium between work and play.

5A The Road To Success

The first four weeks of college for me have been an amazing experience. I have met so many amazing people, who I hope to continue to be friends with throughout these four years. I have been learning more about myself no only as a student but as a human being. I am finding out what my strengths and weaknesses are as a learner. I am starting to figure out what I need to do to succeed in college.

The first thing I have found that has helped me out during these first four weeks is scheduling time to do things just for me. I know as a person that I need time where I can just be alone and relax during the day. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday I am lucky enough to get out of class at 11. When I get out of class I always sit down and do all of my homework that’s due next class. I may get distracted for a few minutes if I need to eat lunch or something but I know that, that time is for me to sit down and do work. This scheduled time on these days has helped me a lot.

On the other hand I have found it a bit harder to do all of my work on Tuesday and Thursday on Tuesday and Thursday. I have class from 11-1:40 and then from 3:15-4:30. Instead of having two classes like I do on Monday, Wednesday and Friday I have three.  I am finding it is a bit of a challenge to get all of that work done at once. So since I have so much time to do my work on MWF I will finish my work left over from Tuesday and Thursday then.

All in all I am very happy that I am finding ways to enjoy life as a college student!!!

5I My Weekend Adventure

This past Sunday my friend Ian and I went on a walk all the way to downtown Hamden. Ian decided that he wanted to apply for a job at Petco. So rather than taking the shuttle down to the plaza, Ian decided he was going to take the 3.6 mile walk all the way there. I decided that I would tag along because I had so much time on my hand that day. We walked all 3.6 miles only to find out that the applications can only be filled out online. After an hour and a half of walking I was like seriously Ian, we had to walk all the way here.

So after playing with some ferrets I decided since we walked all the way there that I was going to buy myself a betta fish.  I picked one out and then we had to walk all the way back with the fish to campus. It was a very long journey for the fish. We were not sure if he would even make it back to campus alive. First of all it was a bit cold out that night, and second of all we were shaking the cup he was in a bit due to the fact that we were walking.

Luckily he did survive. Since we took a very long journey together I decided to name him after my favorite Lord of the Rings character Aragorn. Aragorn is a really cool fish. I love having a pet like him where there is a story behind how I got him.

4B Patience Prudence

Are we born with willpower or is willpower thrust upon us?

In our society I think nature and nurture both play a roll. You can be born as one human being. You can have certain beliefs that you carry around for most of your life. But there’s always going to be people out there in this world who change the way you think about certain aspects of life. For example I was raised Catholic, in the catholic faith it says you’re supposed to believe that being gay is wrong. But my family doesn’t follow those views. Our nature has changed because we don’t follow exactly what we are “supposed to believe”.

So now connecting to the articles these kids really only knew what their parents most likely had taught them to do. They either knew it was okay to do whatever they wanted because their parents never told them otherwise. Or they knew when someone says wait they knew to be patient.

Patience is really and truly a virtue that is very hard to achieve. I struggle a lot with patience. I am one of those people who hates when people are late. I understand if you’re five minutes late. If you’re more than that I become very, very impatient. It is absolutely ridiculous. I got this trait from my dad. He can’t deal with late people. He is more impatient than I am when it comes to this.
