The liberal arts education is something I believe has both
good and bad things. The liberal arts education does prepare you for the
working world outside of college. But at the same time it does take a while to
complete. There are many general education requirements you have to get out of
the way before you are able to get into your major. One benefit of all the
general education courses is that you are able to take courses in things you
have never heard of before. Which means you could find new things that interest
you and possibly even change your major. I know from personal experience that
after taking a course in Sociology, I realized I was interested in it so I have
decided to minor in it. If I had never taken a class in it I probably would
have never become interested in Sociology.
There are some people who believe that liberal arts
education is a waste of their time because they want to get right into their
major. In the beginning I thought there was really no point to the general
education classes. I thought they were just a waist of my time and my money to
take them. Some days I still think that because I wish I could jump right in
and take classes in my major. I have to wait until my first or second semester
to even begin taking classes because I have so many requirements to even get
into my major. I’m jealous of the people who can hop right in like the English and
science majors. They just have to take a few general education classes the
first semester and they are all set.
Overall the liberal arts education program is a very good
thing. It may have a few flaws but nothing on this earth is perfect.
